A list of questions to ask potential housemates.

Are you a student wanting to share a rental house? From a number of experiences, I've developed the list below. Ask every question with a neutral tone and expression. Most have no wrong answer. Watch the person's face as the lips may lie but the eyes don't. Have a friend sit with you when you interview to also watch the persons responses.

  • Where are you from?
  • Smoke?
  • Leave toilet seat up?
  • What do you like to do in your spare time?
  • Are you single?
  • Where do you get your income?
  • Study habits?
  • How often are you home?
  • Do you watch TV?
  • Do you cook?
  • What are your cleaning habits (kitchen, bathroom, vacuuming)
  • Do you have furniture?
  • Why did you leave your last place?
  • Do you have experience sharehousing?
  • Do you pay bills on time?
  • Are you aware of the price for rent/bond?
  • How soon are you looking to move?
  • Pet hates in a share house?
  • What do you do that most annoys other housemates?
  • Do you have a car?
  • Do you get much exercise?
  • Have you ever tried methamphetamine?
  • What drugs have you tried?
  • Do you drink alcohol?
  • Where have you traveled, where would you like to travel?
  • What did you do between high school and Uni?
  • 2 references?
